The Operational Approach (Management Process School): This approach views management as an activity based on certain unique management functions. Management is regarded as a process for getting things done through the functions of planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling. It involves coordination of human and material resources.
Contingency Theory Approach is another extension of modern approach. It also contributed significantly to the evolution of management thoughts. This approach discards the concept of universality in management principles and determines managerial decisions considering situational factors.
It means that modern managers cannot remain the same and they cannot use the same style of management. One of the important characteristics of good management of modern times is concluded in the ability to identify those cultures and beliefs, educational qualities and skills of the staff that will provide positive results, and to adapt special approach to the above mentioned qualities.
Classical Approach to Management. The classical writers thought of the organisation in terms of its purpose and formal structure. They placed emphasis on the planning of work, the technical requirements of the organisation, principles of management, and the assumption of rational and logical behaviour.
Modern approaches to management The modern approaches to management comprise the collection of management theories that dominate organizational management in current times. Some of these approaches bear their roots in the 1950s and the 1960s and continue to be dominant in the management circles to date (Wren, 1987).
